On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/506 Private James Carrol serving with 23rd (4th Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

From the census information it would appear that James's father died when he was a baby and his mother Ellen re-married to a man named William Morgan and had a further six children. In 1911 James and his sister Jessie were living with their mother and step-family in Old Colliery Row, Bedlington. The Enlistment Book shows him as living at Coach Road.

Son of William and Margaret Carrol, of 3, Coach Rd., Bedlington, Northumberland.

James Carrol is remembered at Bedlington as "Carroll" on B15.02 and B15.09 and as "Carrol" on B15.11, B15.16, B15.20 and in B15.26 page 18.
