On Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/4284 Able Seaman John William Woodward, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 26/10/1917.

Colin Boyd had provided the following:

John was born on 18th June 1893. He was working as a miner living with his parents, John and Janet at 84, Milburn Road, Hirst, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 24th April 1915.

He joined the Howe Battalion on 21st September 1915 and was invalided to the UK on 12th February 1916 suffering from frost bitten feet.

John rejoined the Howe Battalion on 14th December 1916 and was invalided to the UK again on 12th February 1917 suffering from trench foot.

John rejoined the Howe Battalion on 15th June 1917 and was posted as missing later reported killed in action or died of wounds on 23rd October 1917.

John William Woodward is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43 and in Hirst on H62.13
