ASHINGTON

Walker, J., A/Smn., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1493 Able Seaman John Walker, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 24/12/1915.

Margaret Allison states that in 1911 he lived at 70 Catherine Street, Ashington, and that he was 21 years old when he died. In 1915 his parents lived at 61 Portia Street, Ashington.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

John was born on November 24th 1895. He was working as a labourer living with his parents at 61, Portia Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 13th 1914.

He joined the Hawke Battalion on May 3rd 1915 and was hospitalised in Gallipoli with debility on July 19th 1915.

John rejoined the Hawke Battalion on July 19th 1915 and was hospitalised again on October 25th 1915 suffering from Myalgia.

After rejoining the Battalion again on December 2nd 1915 John was killed in action on December 24th 1915.

John Walker is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43
