Palmer, J.O., A/Smn., 1915
On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/4515 Able Seaman John Ormiston Palmer, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 26/11/1915.

John was born on 1st November 1894. He was working as a farm servant living with his parents, John and Agnes at Shoreswood, Norham-on Tweed, when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 17th May 1915. This address was later changed to South Doddington, Wooler.

John joined the Hawke Battalion on 21st September 1915 and died of Dysentery on board the Hospital Ship "Aquitania" on 26th November 1915. He was buried at sea.

Note: The CWGC has John's number as Z/45. To have this number he would have had to enlist in early August 1914! Z/4515 is correct for the time he enlisted.

John Ormiston Palmer is remembered in Berwick on B25.01 and in Doddington on D13.01
