In Belford (St. Mary) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 959713 Sergeant Cuthbert Edward Shield, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 10/11/1941.

The headstone reads:

In
loving memory of
Cuthbert Edward
Shield
R.A.F. V.R.
aged 26 years
killed on active service
Nov. 10th 1941.

Sgt. Shield was serving with 217 Squadron, Coastal Command. He was a crew member of Beaufort I l9971 which took off from Manston on a training flight. It flew into the ground in cloud. All four crew were killed.
