In Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1423 Private George Straughan, serving with the 1st/7th Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 19/06/1915.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

George was born in the 4th quarter of 1891. He was the son of Robert and Ann (nee Neal) Straughan, of Longframlington, Northumberland. His father was a coal miner.George’s mother came from Seaham, County Durham, his father was born in Netherton, Northumberland.

The 1881 census shows George’s family lived at North Road, Long Framlington. Rothbury, Northumberland. Robert and Ann now had three children, two daughters and a son. Ann’s brother, John Neal, was also living with them.

By 1891 the family were in North District, Longframlington, Rothbury, Northumberland. The family had now grown to four sons and three daughters.

The address for the Straughan family in 1901 was given as The Onstead, Longframlington, Rothbury, Northumberland. Now George was part of a large family, five sons and five daughters.

In 1911 the family were still at The Onstead. Robert was a widower, and George, his brother John, and sister Rose Emma lived with him. Their mother had died in 1907. Rose Emma became the housekeeper for the family. George was working as a coal miner putter.

Morpeth Herald 02/07/1915 carries a brief obituary:

Private George Straughan, 7th Northumberland Fusiliers, died in France of wounds by shrapnel on June 19th. He was the youngest son of Robert and the late Annie Straughan, Longframlington, and was 23 years of age. He enlisted into the 7th Northumberland Fusiliers two years prior to the declaration of war, and went out to France with his battalion on April 20th. Before the war he worked at West Sleekburn Colliery.
