Mason, R.W., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 21/524 Private Robert Woodcock Mason, serving with the 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

In Embleton (Spitalford) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Benjamin Mason beloved husband of Patience Mason
died at Craster 29th April 1946, aged 74 years.
23rd April 1918 Age 20.
Also of Patience Mason, beloved wife of the above
died 19th April 1957, aged 93 years.
And sons of the above
Robert W. killed in action 1st July 1916, aged 21 years.
Alex. W., 23rd April 1918 aged 20 years
Also two daughters Evelyn and Mary Ann died in infancy.

He was the son of Benjamin and Patience Mason, of North Craster.

Morpeth Herald 19/01/1917 carries a breif obituary:

Mrs Mason, of Craster, has had official word that her son, Private Robert Woodcock Mason, Northumberland Fusiliers, who had been missing since July 1st, is now reported killed in action. Previous to the war he was employed at Craster Quarry.

Robert W. Mason is remembered in Craster on C61.04
