In Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of C/12324 Rifleman George Stephenson, serving with the King's Royal Rifle Corps who died 28/12/1916.

In Alwinton churchyard is a family headstone for Stephenson which reads:

died July 30th 1908
aged 52 years
Mary Ann,
daughter of the above
died July 20th 1900
aged 9 years.
and of his children
Lily, died March 20, 1919, aged 8 years
Jane, died April 2, 1915, aged 32 years,
Clement, Pte., E.Y.
died May 30, 1916, aged 21 years
George Pte. K.R.R.
died Dec. 28, 1916, aged 35 years
Isabella Alice
died Dec.12, 1918, aged 19 years
and of Isabella, wife of the above
John S. Stephenson
died Feb.19 1930 aged 75 years.

He was the son of Isabella Stephenson of Great Ryle, Whittingham. He died 28/12/1916 is buried Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium. Lijssenthoek was on the main communication line between the allied bases and Ypres Battlefield. It was out of range of German guns and became a place for clearing stations.
