Ramsay, D.W. F/Sub.Lt., 1918

Donald Wynyard Ramsay

In Bousbecque Communal Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Flight Sub-Lieutenant Donald Wynyard Ramsay, serving with the 1st (Naval) Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service who died 17/07/1917.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Flight Sub-Lt Ramsay was killed on July 17th 1917 when his Sopwith Triplane N5480 was shot down by enemy aircraft and crashed near the village of Wervicq, on the Franco-Belgian border north of Lille. He and two other British airmen had been escorting a reconnaissance aircraft, but all fell victim to German fighters.

Ramsay had previously scored his one and only victory on May 27th, flying the same Sopwith Triplane, when he shot down an Albatros Scout.

The Newcastle Daily Journal 13/07/1917 carries the following notice:

'Flight Sub-Lieut. D. W. Ramsay
Mr. and Mrs. Norman F. Ramsay, of Osborne Road, Newcastle, and The Grange, Alnmouth, have received news that their son, Flight Sub-Lieut. Donald W. Ramsay, R.N., is reported missing from Saturday last. He was educated at Corchester School, Corbridge, and later at Oundle School, where he was captain of the Rugby fifteen, and also captain of the School.'

Donald Wynyard Ramsay is remembered in Alnmouth on A10.01, A10.03 and A10.06 in Corbridge on C52.12 where his name is spelled 'Ramsey' and in Jesmond on J1.06
