In Lemington Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1254 Gunner Joseph Henry Edward Groom, serving with the Royal Field Artillery who died 20/12/1917.

The family headstone reads:

In loving memory
of
Joseph Henry Edward,
dearly beloved son of
Joseph & Margaret Ann Groom
of Scotswood
Died December 20th 1917,
of wounds received in France
aged 20 years.

Coroner's report Number 522 21/12/1917:

"Gunner Joseph Henry Edward Groom aged 20 years. Discharged soldier, previously No 1254 1st Northumbrian Brigade. R.F.A. Depot, Woolwich. Home address. Rokeby Arms, Scotswood on Tyne, died in 1st Newcastle General Hospital at 3.15pm on 20th.

After enquiries the Coroner granted a certificate. No inquest necessary. Injured at seat of War."
