Barton, W., Pte., 1917
On the Tyne Cot memorial is the name of 7534 Private William Barton serving with the 97th Company Machine Gun Corp (Infantry) who died 02/12/1917.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

William was born in 1895, the son of Tom and Margaret Barton, and in 1901 the census informs us that he lived in North Blyth, Cambois, Bedlington, Northumberland with his parents and a brother and sister. His father was a miner.

In 1911 he lived at 16 Portland Street. Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with his widowed Mother, and his brother Tom. He was working as a driver in a coal mine.

William married Martha Tingle in 1915, and they had a daughter Elsie.

Ron Carson has a few other details:

William was born in early 1895 and was baptised on 27th January 1895 at Sugley, Northumberland. He was the son of Mrs Margaret Luke (formerly Barton) and the Thomas. He was the middle child of three, an elder sister and younger brother.

William married Martha Tingle in the first quarter of 1915 at Newcastle upon Tyne and they lived at 60 Elm Street, Benwell, Newcastle.
