On Pozieres Memorial is the name of 34079 Private Edward Walmsley serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 22/03/1918.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Thomas Walmsley
who died 25th July 1910, aged 60 years,
also of Margaret, beloved wife of the above,
who died 24th Aug.1928, aged 76 years,
and Edward, their son
who fell in action in France, 22nd March 1918, aged 28 years
and Margaret Ellen, their eldest daughter, beloved wife of
Thomas A. Forsyth, who died September 25th 1929
aged 44 years,
also of the above Thomas A. Forsyth
who died 29th March 1931, aged 47 years.

Edward was born on 2nd October 1889 at Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of Margaret (nee Hutchinson) and the late Thomas, of 14 Douglas Terrace, Newcastle.

He was the husband of Charlotte M. (nee Bell) whom he married in the first quarter of 1918 at Newcastle.

Edward enlisted at Newcastle with the 6th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers as a Private (Signaller) and was transferred to the 12/13th Battalion. The records state that he was a Lance Corporal when reported missing between 21-28 March 1918. The official date given for his death is the 28th March.
