In Newcastle (St John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

144784 Serjeant
W.H. Steel
Royal Air Force
1st July 1918, age 23.

He trod the path of duty
with a courage sublime
Aug.15th 1914 – July 1st 1918.

William Hall was born at Benwell in 1895, the son of William Hall and Johanna Frederica, 9 Condercum Road, Benwell.

William initially enlisted with the 10th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 11148.

He was attested with the Royal Air Force on 1st September 1914 and assigned to the 2nd Fighting School (Marske by the Sea) in Yorkshire where he served as an instructor. William died from heart failure and showed signs of pneumonia.
