On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Electrician Charles William Mitchinson serving with the Merchant Navy, who died 29/07/1943.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In
loving memory
of
Hannah
the beloved wife of
John Mitchinson
died December 9th 1920,
aged 62 years,
also the above John
died March 15th 1948, aged 88 years,
also Charles William their son
lost at sea through enemy action
July 29th 1943, aged 46 years.

Charles was born on 11 December 1890 at Haltwhistle to parents John and Hannah.

He initially served on the Houston City, which he joined on 14th September 1937, before his transfer to M.V. Cornish City (Bideford), where he served as an electrician.

The ship was sunk by U-177 and Charles was believed to have drowned.
