Ernest Alfred was born at Sunderland in the first quarter of 1897, the son of George Abel and the late Hannah (nee Wood). He was the stepson of Frances. Ernest lived at 20 Maughan Street and enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne with 1/6th Battalion and served with ‘D’ Company. He is recorded as having been wounded/sick on 26th April 1915.
