Alfred George was born in the third quarter of 1898 at Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of Edward H.A. and the late Martha Elizabeth Heath (nee Durbin) of 70 Longley Street, Newcastle.

He enlisted in Newcastle and served with the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion.
