Death divides
but memory clings .

Smith Havelock was born at Elswick and enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne, serving with the 19th (Tyneside Pioneers) Battalion. He was the son of Ridley and the late Susanah; husband of Alice (nee Maguire) whom he married at Newcastle in the second quarter of 1893.

According to the 1911 Census Smith and Alice lived at 9 Portland Street, Bentinck, Newcastle, along with their three daughters and son; his occupation was described as a ‘coal cartman’.
