Fairlam, J.T., Pte., 1917

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 12254 Private James Telford Fairlam serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 25/03/1917.

The headstone reads:

James Telford
Fairlam
9th N.F. ? Company
aged 26 years, son of
John and Margaret Fairlam
who died March 25th 1917
of wounds received at the
Battle of the Somme
also the above John Fairlam
who died May 9th 1935, aged 79 years
also the above Margaret Fairlam
who died March 6th 1955, aged 96 years.

James Telford was the son of John and Margaret of Low Elswick House, St Anthony’s, Newcastle upon Tyne. He served with ‘B’ Squadron/Company, 9th Battalion. He was wounded twice before his fatal wounds in 1917. He was firstly admitted to the 51st Field Ambulance Hospital on 20th December 1915 suffering from a shrapnel wound to the left arm and again on 6th July 1916 suffering from a gunshot wound to the left forearm. He died at home.
