In Rieux Communal Cemetery, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1531244 Sergeant Joseph Black, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 16/06/1944.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt. Black was the Flight Engineer on Avro Lancaster II LL690 JI-J of 514 Squadron, which was lost on a mission to bomb railway yards at Valenciennes. The Lancaster is thought to have been shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter, and crashed between the two small villages of Iwuy and Rieux-en-Cambresis, near Cambrai, with the loss of all seven crew members.

Joseph Black is remembered in Byker on B95.07 and B95.13
