Birkett, W., A/Smn., 1915
In Skew Bridge Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/183 Able Seaman William Birkett, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 02/07/1915.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

William was born on 31st December 1893 and was working as a grocer living with his father, Cuthbert, at 38, Union Hall Road, Byker when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 29th September 1914.

He was posted to the Drake Battalion on 19th December 1914 and served until he died in 2nd (RN) Field Hospital in Gallipoli on 2nd July 1915 after suffering a bayonet wound to the back on the previous day.

William Birkett is remembered in Byker on B95.01 and B95.17
