Grave Registration Form W3372

In Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 3444 Private Thomas Cross, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 15/09/1916.

Thomas Cross was born on the 22nd March 1897 in Newcastle upon Tyne, and was the son of Robert and Mary Ann Cross. He was the eldest child, and had eight siblings - two of which were born after his death.

His father was a lawyer, and the family were living at 110A Back, Byker Bank, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne.

He enlisted with the 1/6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was in 'B' Company. Thomas is listed as having died of wounds on the 15th September 1916, age 19.

The 1/6th Battalion was in the 50th Northumbrian Division and was heavily involved in the Second Battle of Ypres where the Germans first employed poison gas.
