In Benwell (St.James) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

8456 Private
L. Carr
Highland Light Infantry
26th June 1917 aged 48

The Geordie at War Project states:

“Private Carr was born in 1876 in Cassop, County Durham. He was a coal miner. He may have been a regular soldier fighting during the Boer War as he is not shown on the 1901 Census. In the 1911 Census he is shown as living in Benwell with his wife, daughter and seven step children. He re-enlisted on 23 August 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War. He was discharged from the Army on the 18 March 1915 as a result of wounds received in action. He was awarded a Silver Star Badge which was given to discharged servicemen to indicate their past service.”

He is remembered at Benwell on B86.02
