John Burdon was born 10th November 1896, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the youngest son of John George Burdon, of Benwell Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his wife Blanche Louisa, daughter of General Edward Somerset, C.B.
[Blanche Louisa Somerset (1868 – 20 Aug 1946), married John George Burdon on the 4th February 1892.]
John was educated at Aysgarth, Repton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
He was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment on the 13th January 1915, and then a Temporary Lieutenant in September 1916. He was originally sent to France on the 27th April 1915. He then was sent to Mesopotamia, where he served with the Kut Relief Force.
John was mentioned in Sir Percy Lakes' Despatch for the period of operations 19th January to the 30th April 1916. [London Gazette, 19th October 1916].
He was killed in action on the 8th March, near the Turkish redoubt at the Battle of Es-Sinn.
