Joseph was the son of Joseph Garside residing at 109 Ellesmere Road. Benwell, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

He received a gun shot wound to the spine while in action on 13th November 1916, and was invalided back on 24th August 1917. He developed Paralysis Cystitis, after discharge and died at the Home for Incurables on the 11th June 1918.

He is remembered at Benwell on B86.02and B86.19
