In Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul is the Commonwealth War Grave of 202631 Private William Barnes serving with the 1st Battalion Cameronian (Scottish Rifles) who died 13/04/1918.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

loving memory of
William T. Waugh
late engineer of the Newcastle Fire Brigade
and beloved husband of
Margaret J Waugh
who died Nov. 23rd 1909, aged 42 years.
Until the day break and the shadows flee away.
also the above Margaret J Waugh
who died April 1st 1914, aged 43 years,
also of Private W.T. Waugh
elder son of the above,
who was killed in action in France,
July 1st 1916, aged 23 years,
also of William Barnes 2/5 Scottish Rifles,
beloved husband of Catherine
and uncle of the above soldier,
killed in action, April 13th 1918,
also Margaret, mother of the above,
who died Dec 13th 1922, aged 79 years,
also William, husband of the above,
who died Aug 27th 1923, aged 80 years.

William Barnes was born in Winlaton in 1876 and enlisted in Newcastle. He was the son of William and Margaret and the husband of Catherine, 104 Strathmore Crescent, Benwell Grove, Newcastle. He served with the 1st Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and was formerly (2362 Private). He was 42 years old when he died.
