In Roclincourt Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 28751 Private Alfred Richard Cross, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 09/04/1917.

In Benwell (St.James) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Margaret ?
Beloved wife of William
Who died ? ?1919
Also son of the above
Pte. Alfred Richard
2nd Tyneside Scottish
Killed in action April 9th 1917
Aged 19 years

The Geordie at War Project states:

Private Cross was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Scarpe, part of the Battle of Arras. The Battalion was involved in the first phase of the action to take the first objective; 20th Northumberland Fusiliers then passed them to attack the second objective.
