In the Citadel Military Cemetery, Fricourt Somme France is the Commonwealth War Grave for 13131 Private John Joseph Hart, serving with the Border Regiment (7th Battalion) who died 26/06/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Joseph Hart was born at Newburn, Northumberland, in 1890 to parents John William Hart from North Walsham, Norfolk and Sarah Bell Hart from Newcastle.

In 1891, John was one year old, living at Heddon on the Wall, Throckley Northumberland with his parents. His father John William Hart was a coal miner. John had a sister at this time - Mary E. who was five years old.

By 1901, John was 11 years old and his family was living at 115, North Street, Newburn. Siblings in the home now included Harriet, 13, Sarah Jane, 9, Robert, 6 and Lydia, 4 in addition to Mary E who was now 15.

The 1911 Census records the Hart family living at 16, Oak Street, Throckley. John, aged 21 was single at this time and employed as a water leader in the coal mines underground. John married Mary Wardle, registered at Morpeth, in the second quarter of 1915 and they had one child, Eleanor Josephine, in 1916. It is very possible that John did not see his daughter as he went to out to France 24th July 1915.

Military records show John Joseph Hart enlisted at Newburn while residing at Throckley. After his death his effects went to his widow Mary 1916 (October) and then in 1919 to his widow who was now Mary Parr, having remarried. The photo shown associates this soldier with Bedlington but no link could be established.

John Joseph Hart is remembered in Newburn on N13.02 and in Throckley on T14.01
