Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 1320 Private William Simpson, serving with the 'B' Company, 1/4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 25/05/1915.

William Simpson was born at Dewley, Throckley, Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 2nd January 1897, the son of the late William Simpson, and his wife Eliza (17 Warkworth Street, Lemington-on-Tyne, daughter of William Tiplady, of Kibblesworth, Durham.

They resided at 17 Beech Street, Throckley, Newburn.

He enlisted at the outbreak of War and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders. He was killed in action west of Wieltte, Poijitze on the 25th May 1915. He was unmarried.

Sergeant R. Rewcastle, of 'B' Company, in forwarding to his mother a bible taken from his pocket, wrote:-He died nobly while doing a duty that would have increased the safety of his comrades. He was buried the same day, and a cross marks the spot where he lies.

His mother later re-married and was called Richardson.

The Newcastle Journal Monday, 28/06/1915, carried a mention of him under Northern casualties.

He is remembered in Throckley on T14.01
