Hills, J.G., Pte., 1915

Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 9669 Private John George Hills, serving with 'C' Company, 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry who died 09/08/1915.

John George Hills was born 31st January 1889 at New Benwell, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, son of John Hills.

Educated at New Benwell. He enlisted on the 17th September 1906, and served 2 years in Cork, then 4 years in India, where he was on duty during the Delhi Durbar.

John George returned to England and married 31st March 1914, at St Peter's Church, Wallsend, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Florence, (13 Third Street, Wallsend). Their son John George Robson, was born 15th March 1915.

John was mobilised the 5th August 1914.

He went to France with the British Expeditionary Force on the 23rd October 1914, and was for 10 months in the thick of fighting.

He was killed in action on the 9th August 1915 at the Battle of Hooge.
