WALLSEND

Turns, S., A/Smn., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of Tyneside 6/212 Able Seaman Sidney Turns, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 13/07/1915.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Sydney was born on 17th January 1896. He was working as an apprentice carpenter in the Neptune Yard, Wallsend, living with his mother, Charlotte at 180, High Street East, Wallsend when he enlisted in the RNVR on 30th March 1914.

Sydney joined the Nelson Battalion on 22nd October 1914 and was killed in action in Gallipoli on 13th July 1915.

The strange service number is because he enlisted before the war.

Sydney Turns is remembered in Wallsend on W7.03, W7.09, W7.12 and W7.21
