Simmons, J.W., A/Smn. 1915

On the Helles Memorial is the name of KX/94 Able Seaman John Simmons, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 03/05/1915.

In Wallsend Church Bank Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
John, beloved husband of Alice Simmons
who died April 6th 1917, aged 57 years.
Also John William, their son
who was killed in the action at the Dardanelles
May 3rd 1915, aged 22 years.
Also May, their daughter
who died March 28th 1918, aged 27 years.
Also the above Alice Simmons
who died February 12th 1934 aged 72 years.
"At rest".

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

John was born in 1893. He was working as a labourer living with his parents, John and Alice at 57, High Street East, Wallsend when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on September 3rd 1914. This address was later changed to 86, Coronation Street, Wallsend.

He transferred to the R.N.V.R. on September 9th 1914 and joined "B" Company of the Nelson Battalion on the same day. John was posted as missing assumed killed in action in Gallipoli on May 3rd 1915.

John William Simmons is remembered in Wallsend on W7.03 and W7.09 page 19
