In Essex Farm Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 8843 Private John Burdis, serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 19/05/1916.

On Wednesday 28th July 1915, it was reported that J. Burdis had been wounded.

He died at Ypres between E23 and E26 and Dawson City and the Canal Bank, probably due to shelling.

It was reported in the Newcastle Journal, Wednesday 7th June 1916 that he had been killed.

He is mentioned in The Steel of the D.L.I.: The 2nd Battalion at War; John Sheen; Pen and Sword Books; 2009; Page 152. ISBN 9781848841437.

He is remembered at South Shields on S86.055
