Davies, G., L/Cpl., 1916
In Bancourt British Cemetery is the name of 37064 Lance-Corporal Gabriel Davis, serving with the ‘D’ Company, 2/York and Lancaster Regt. (16 Brigade, 6th Division), who died 12/10/1916.

Gabriel was the son of Israel and Henrietta Davis of 73 Woodbine Street, South Shields (in 1911).

Israel was born in Poland and was a 65-year old glazier and picture framer in 1911. Henrietta was born in Germany and was 49 in 1911. They had been married for 29 years and had had eight children, all still living. In 1891 they were living at 25 Duke Street, Jarrow, and in 1901 they resided at 87 Ferry Street, Jarrow.

Siblings (1901 ages): Emmanuel (18; born North Shields – Tynemouth, March q. 1883; a house painter), David Levi (14; born Jarrow – SS, September q. 1886; a ship plater’s marker), Dora (12; born Jarrow), Philip (8; born Jarrow – SS, December 1893), Henry (4; born Jarrow – SS, December q. 1896), Maud (3; born Jarrow – SS, March q. 1898) and Harold (1; born Jarrow – SS, December q. 1899).1911 ages: Dora 22, Philip 17; apprentice compositor at a printing works, Henry 14; a grocery shop assistant, Maud 13 and Harold 11.

He was born in South Shields. His birth was registered in South Shields during the March quarter of 1890. He served under the alias ‘Robson’ (CWGC).
