JARROW

White, N., 2nd Lieut., 1916

On Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France is the name of 2nd Lieutenant Nathan White serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers 29th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Attached 21st (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Nathan was the son of Nathan and Martha White at Jarrow born in 1885. Nathan Senior was the Gas Works' Manager for Palmer's Shipyard for many years and on his death in 1909 his son Nathan took over as Manager.

A Works Manager residing at Jarrow, he was Initiated on the 30th March 1910; Passed 27th April 1910 and Raised on the 31st August 1910 into St Bede 1119 Lodge of Freemasons at Jarrow.

He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on the 1st July 1916 aged 30 and is Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, Pier & Face 10B, 11B & 12B.

Shields Daily Gazette 14/07/1916 reports:-

" The greatest blow consists of the death of Lieutenant Nathan White. He was a fine young fellow and looked every inch a soldier. When the King called for men he was amongst the first to offer to serve. His death removes a young fellow of much promise."

Nathan White is remembered at Jarrow on J2.10 in Jarrow Masonic Hall J2.51 and in the Masonic Roll of Honour
