In Monchy British Cemetery Monchy-le-Preux is the Commonwealth War Grave of 47129 Private John Patterson serving with the 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wale's Own) who died 23/04/1917.

Mr and Mrs Lee have submitted the following:-

John Patterson was born in 1890 the eldest son of William Joseph and Mary Patterson.

In 1891 the family were living at 6 Ferry Street Jarrow with William a shipyard labourer and three children Margaret, Elizabeth Ann and John.

By 1901 William was an Engine Works Forge labourer. There were James, George and Mary living at Ferry Street.

By 1911 William and Mary had been married 29 years and had eleven children of whom three had died. They are living at 11 Walter Street Jarrow. William (Snr) is a general labourer, as are John and James Moir, Joseph William is an apprentice ship plater, and George is a rivet catcher - all in the shipyards.

John enlisted at Newcastle and joined the West Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917.

His brother Joseph William was a prisoner of war.

John is remembered at Jarrow on J2.10
