HMHS Salta
James Cowley was born on the 8th July 1894, at Seaham Harbour, Durham, the eldest son of Michael Cowley, of 9 Bank Head Street, New Seaham, Durham, Miner, and his wife Lily, daughter of Hymess Draper.
James was educated at Seaham Colliery Boys School, he then was a Putter at Seaham Colliery.
James enlisted on the 18th August 1914, and served in the Dardanelles campaign from the 1st August 1915. He was mortally wounded on the 11th August and died of his wounds in action on the Peninsula on the Hospital Ship 'HMHS Salta' on the same day.
