Oakman, R., Pte., 1918

Auckland Chronicle 15/05/1919

In Horden St Mary's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of S/12021 Private Richard Oakman, serving with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who died 04/05/1919.

The Auckland Chronicle and County Gazette 15/05/1919 reports:

"Military Funeral.
The body of Pte. R. Oakman (28) of Horden, was interred at Horden on Thursday afternoon with full military honours. The procession was led by the band of the Salvation Army playing the Dead March. The service at St.Mary's Church was conducted by the Rev. M. Thurlow. Pte. Oakham was invalided home in October, 1918, suffering from a strained heart as the result of lifting a shell. He never recovered and died in Sunderland War Hospital on 4th May. Previous to the war he worked in Horden Colliery."
