In Monk Hesleden (Blackhall) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1371428 Aircraftman Second Class George Bell, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 15/05/1941.

The Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland’s People website records that A.C.2 Bell died as the result of an accidental gunshot wound to the chest, at 9.30 p.m. at Dollarbeg, near Alloa.

His death was reported in the Sunderland Echo 17/05/1941:

DIED ON SERVICE
Mrs George Bell, of 35 Hardwick Street, Blackhall, has received news of her husband’s death whilst serving with the R.A.F. somewhere in Scotland. Mr Bell, who was 34, was in business as a window-cleaner, and was a popular musician and member of the local dance band. The funeral is to take place at Blackhall.

He is remembered in Blackhall Colliery on B144.01
