Memorial to H.M.T. Lancastria

On Runnymede Memorial is the name of 937856 Corporal James Henry Roxborough, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 17/06/1940.

Corporal Roxborough was killed aboard the troopship R.M.S. Lancastria, 145943, which was sunk with huge loss of life when it was bombed off St. Nazaire. The ship was evacuating Allied personnel from France when it was tracked by the Luftwaffe, and it sank with the death toll estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,800.

He is remembered at Blackhall Colliery on B144.01 and B144.02
