On the Singapore Memorial is the name of 995058 Leading Aircraftman William Ernest Payne, serving with the Royal Air Force, who died 07/06/1945.

L.A.C. Payne died of Malaria whilst a Prisoner-of-War of the Japanese in Sandakan, Malaysia. He died on the infamous Second Sandakan March, and was reportedly buried beside the track where he died.

He is remembered in Blackhall Colliery on B144.01
