Lister, G., D.F.M., P/O, 1944
In St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 176743 Pilot Officer George Lister, D.F.M., serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 20/06/1944.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

P/O Lister was killed when North American Mitchell II FV998 of 180 Squadron was lost on a mission to attack V-1 launch sites at Bois Coquerell in the Pas-de-Calais. The Mitchell was shot down by heavy flak, with the loss of all five crew members.

P/O Lister’s D.F.M. was gazetted posthumously in the London Gazette of September 18th 1945, and the announcement was reported in the Sunderland Echo of Friday, 02/08/1945:

BLACKHALL HERO’S D.F.M.
Mr. and Mrs. R. Lister of Wave Crest, Coast Road, Blackhall Rocks, attended the Investiture held at Buckingham Palace this week, and received from the hands of the King the D.F.M. awarded to their son, Pilot Officer George Lister.The honour was conferred upon Pilot Officer Lister for bravery and devotion to duty in 1943 when he held the rank of Flight-Sergeant. Shortly after being commissioned in 1944 Pilot Officer Lister was reported missing.

He is remembered in Blackhall Colliery on B144.01
