F/Sgt. Jackson was killed when Handley Page Hampden I AT217 EA-S of 49 Squadron was lost on a ‘Gardening’ mission to lay mines off the Frisian Islands. The Hampden was lost without trace, with the loss of all four crew members. F/Sgt Jackson's body was washed ashore on July 13th on the island of Rottumeroog.
