Hunter, T., Sgt., 1941
In Monk Hesleden (Blackhall) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1001262 Sergeant (Pilot) Thomas Hunter, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 29/09/1941.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt. Hunter was killed when Westland Whirlwind P7009 of 263 Squadron was lost returning from a mission to attack Lannion airfield in Brittany. When some five miles from Eddystone lighthouse, Sgt. Hunter reported that he was running low on fuel, and that he was going to bale out of this aircraft. No trace of him was found in the ensuing search, until his body was washed ashore on October 10th.

He is remembered in Blackhall Colliery on B144.01 and at Easington Colliery on E52.01
