Wilcox, J.R., F/O, 1943
On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 136708 Flying Officer John Robert Wilcox, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 08/09/1943.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

F/O/ Wilcox was a crew member of Consolidated Liberator V FL959 of 224 Squadron, which was forced to ditch after being attacked by four Junkers Ju-88 bombers of V./KG40 in the Bay of Biscay on September 2nd 1943. Of the nine crew, one died in the ditching, and the remainder managed to escape in a dinghy. F/O Wilcox, badly injured in the attack, died on September 7th, and was buried at sea. One more died the next day, and the survivors were finally rescued on September 9th by H.M.S. Wildgoose. Two more died on board ship.

He is remembered in Billingham on B139.01 and B139.05
