In Washington Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 4452626 Serjeant John Dawson Parker serving with the 11th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 24/07/1942.

The headstone reads:-

Sacred
to the memory of
our dear mother
Mary Irving
who died 6th May 1941
aged 71 years
Also Sgt. John Dawson Parker D.L.I.
grandson of the above
who died 24th July 1942
aged 21 years
also Ellen wife of John Parker
(rest beneath soil)

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 29/07/1942 carries the following notice:

"Parker, Washington, 42, Hollinhill Road, 24th (motor accident), aged 21 years 3 months, Sergt. J. D. Parker, D.L.I., dearly loved son of John and Ellen Parker. Interment Washington Cemetery, Thursday. Friends meet at church 3 p.m. Deeply mourned."
