Clark, R.W., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 24431 Private William Clark, serving with the Grenadier Guards who died 25/09/1916.

It is thought that this was “R.W. Clark” known as William.

Washington School’s Military History and European Culture Project has submitted the following:

R WILLIAM CLARK – Grenadier Guards – 25.9.16
This appears to be William Clark(e) of 4 Grenadier Guards who was killed in action on 25 September 1916 in heavy fighting in Trones Wood. 444 men of his battalion were casualties that day. RW is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Though his will left his estate to Harold Clarke of Cheshire it appears that his father, William, was paid the War Gratuity.

Pam and Ken Linge of the Thiepval Project have submitted:

There were two guardsmen called William Clark who died on the same day and are commemorated on Thiepval memorial. Although CWGC just show as William we think that he was really Robert William and this could be him (aged 13) in the 1911 census at 4 Gladstone Terrace, Usworth. It fits in respect of the father being William and being born in South Shields.

William Clark is remembered in Usworth on U9.01 and in Washington on W96.22
