James Emmanuel Graham was born in Sunderland on 26 March 1882.

James was a joiner by trade and worked at the North East Railway Wagon Works at Gateshead from 1900 to 1911 when he was made redundant. He went to Boston in New England in 1912 to look for work. He had a sister who lived there. He was not successful so he worked his passage back to England.

He was married with four children when he enlisted in February 1915, service number 65896, and another son was born during his service. He was gassed while in France, and medically discharged in September 1916.

He obtained work as a joiner in Sunderland but was twice recalled by the Army and twice rejected as medically unfit. As well as the effects of gas he had contracted T.B.

He died in the War Pensioners Hospital in Sunderland in January 1920 leaving a widow, Emma, four boys and one girl, the eldest child was 12 years old.

This photo was taken in 1908 when James was playing football, which he loved, for a team in Sunderland called Havelock.
