Knaggs, W.E., Sgt., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of 11907 Serjeant William Edward Knaggs, serving with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment who died 11/04/1917.

Moira Marshall has submitted the following:

This was my uncle, my father being the youngest of the family whilst William was the eldest.

My father was born in 1914 so never knew his eldest brother.

There were 8 children although only three sons lived into adulthood apart from William, four children died in childhood.

The family were brought up in High Street East Sunderland, their mother eventually running a tobacconist and in part general dealers shop.

I recall seeing the war medals for William when visiting my grandmother, who by then lived in Fulwell, although after her death they were not to be found. I have a cousin of the same name who would have loved to have them. As often happened the family names were passed down to the next generation.

It is amazing that these young men willingly went to war, don't think it would happen today.

Pte Knaggs is remembered in Sunderland on S140.048 page 103 and S140.097
