Kelly, J., Pte., 1916
In Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 21026 Private Joseph Kelly, serving with the Lancashire Fusiliers who died 30/04/1916.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 02/05/1916 reports:

The Sunderland Coroner inquired yesterday into the circumstances of the death of a private in the Lancashire Fusiliers, named Joseph Kelly, which occurred on Sunday.

The man’s brother stated that deceased was 34 years of age and was discharged from the Army as medically unfit owing to a wound in the head which he received in the Suvla Bay landing. Since coming home, six weeks ago, he appeared to be wandering in his mind.

P.C. Ainsley spoke to visiting the home of deceased in George Street on Sunday morning and there finding the man hanging from the stair bannister by a muffler.

A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned.

He is remembered in Sunderland on S140.089
