In New Silksworth (St. Leonard) Roman Catholic Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of 24465 Private Richard Henry Lowes, serving with the 10th (Service) Battalion, The Worcestershire Regiment who died 24/04/1918.

Richard was born at Murton Colliery on the 29th September 1878, son of Henry Lowes, a miner, of 29 Frank Street, Southwick-on-Wear, Co Durham, and his wife Sarah, daughter of Robert Alderson Middleton.

He married at South Shields in St Peter's and St Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Tyne Dock, on the 10th December 1898 Margaret (of 11 Aline Street, Silksworth, Sunderland) daughter of Oliver Robins. They had 2 daughters Ann born 26th January 1902 and Winifrid Robins (adopted) born 15th February 1909.

He enlisted on the 5th September 1914 and arrived in France and Flanders on the 24th February 1916.

10th (Service) Battalion were formed at Worcester in September 1914 as part of K2 and came under orders of 57th Brigade in 19th Division. Moved to Perham Down and in March 1915 to Tidworth. Landed in France 18th July 1915. 22nd June 1918 then reduced to cadre strength, most personnel going to 3rd Battalion. 28th June 1918 cadre attached to 121st Brigade in 40th Division. 10th July 1918, then absorbed by 17th Battalion.

He died of wounds received on the 17th of April in action at Kemmel Hill. But died on the 24th April at Warrington Hospital. Age 39.

His Commanding Officer wrote: "He was a very plucky man, and always did whatever he was allotted with cheerfulness and without fear."
